Ancestral Recall
Standing where my grandfather once stood with his camera — a collaboration across the years.
作品についてAbout the work
Ancestral Recall
Ancestral Recall is a collaboration between my grandfather and me.
My grandfather had been involved with photography since the 1950s, and he was the photographer closest to me. Using his photographs as a guide, I visit the places he photographed and take my own pictures there.
On the left is his photograph; on the right, mine. The scenery and the way people dress have changed, yet standing in the same spot, I can feel what he was looking at.
In this work I do not choose where to shoot. The destination and the viewpoint are left to the photographs he left behind. Setting my own “I” aside, I watch for the moment a record begins to take on meaning across time.
Receiving his photographs, adding my own, and passing them on to the next generation: I hope to keep photography's role of connecting time alive.
